Bowls

I probably make more bowls than anything else and, mostly, I prefer uncluttered designs as I hope these examples show.

Singapore Bowl
Wax finish

Inspired by the Singapore balls I make, (see ‘Other pieces’) this bowl was a big challenge to produce. It is made from birch ply and the retracting points are ebony. The interior is black and the rim decorated with a design of interlocking circles with black segments. You will not see another bowl like this one!

Stock No. 479

Birch ply, Afromosia & Ebony

This bowl was made by laminating layers of birch, afromosia and ebony to create the pattern, and then turning the bowl to show off these timbers in an attractive way.

Sycamore

The black circles are resin inlays mixed with Ebony powder to make them black. I call this piece ‘Bubbles’ for fairly obvious reasons.

A simple and elegant bowl which lets the natural beauty of the wood speak for itself. This is one of my favourites.

Oak Burr
Wax finish

Burrs are regions of wild growth on the tree which give rise to strange and beautiful patterns within the timber. This natural edged burr bowl has a paler area of sapwood which helps to set off the darker areas. The ‘wings’ have been carved to add texture.

Spalted Sycamore
Wax finish

Spalting is caused by water getting into the log when newly cut and causing staining and some softening of the timber. It produces beautiful natural patterns in the wood which are only revealed when it is turned. Two black inlay rings add a simple decoration.

31cm dia x 7.5cm
(12¼in x 3in)

£138

This item is displayed at the Gallery on the Usk in Powys, and may be purchased from them or directly from me.
